The Ramp aims to give you some straightforward skateboarding, simplifying things so that you can start doing tricks with ease.
It’s just you and the ramp in this game. You hop off, start skating around, and then do whatever tricks strike you when you hit the air. You can also grind the rails if you prefer that to flying through the air. Not that you can’t wipe out if you do something wrong. A few too many turns in the air means your face will be meeting the wooden ramp first. If you can pull the trick off, you get a little celebratory message about what trick you did, which is a nice little touch to convince you to keep trying for harder tricks.
What’s most appealing about the experience is how seamless and streamlined it is. You’re on the ramp in moments, and can easily twist and turn while racing around on the ground or in the air. There’s nothing to unlock, no point systems to mess with, and no other oddities to get in the way. You get a few different styles of ramp, though, if you’d rather skate in someone’s empty pool. Or do a leap between rooftops, with a massive drop in the middle. You can pull off a whole lot of spins in the air with that distance. It’s just a long way to the ground if you goof up.
The Ramp puts little in between you and its skateboarding play, making for an experience that feels very intuitive, even if skateboarding is utterly beyond me in real life. Here, you can become decent pretty quickly with very few broken bones, really getting a feel for what it would be like to hit that air.
The Ramp is available now on Steam.
