TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity has players across the globe scrambling up a tower that changes daily, seeing who can scale it before it brings new challenges the next day.
You’ve had the rotten luck of getting caught up in a tower filled with traps and critters that would much prefer if you died. Still, it’s not like you have anything better to do than try to reach the top, so up you go. If you’re lucky and skilled, maybe you’ll be one of the only people who manages to make it to the roof that day. If you’re not, you’ll leave a lovely tombstone for other players to find as they climb up. At least your corpse will warn other people to be careful in the area, I guess.
The game offers some compelling roguelike action, but with a level that stays static for the full day. No dealing with a totally reshuffled dungeon or anything. You can take some time to learn the stage and its hazards (even bug other players for clues if you like, as the level is global each day). There are branching routes through the dungeon, though, so maybe your path won’t be exactly the same as another player’s. Nor will your outfit, as you can customize your adept climber if you want to die in a nice, personalized outfit.
TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity offers an experience that is a bit less random than many of the roguelikes I’ve played, but that allows for a bit of memorization and practice to help you out along the way. It’s a nice touch, as is seeing the other players who all died before you did. Makes me feel a bit better about myself when I at least lived longer than some other poor explorer.
TOKOYO: The Tower of Perpetuity is available now on Steam Early Access.
