One of the greatest mechanics I have ever encountered is the ability to hold hands with an NPC. Couple this with unbridled joy and wacky explosions and you have Wattam.
When I was watching others play Wattam at Pax East, there was hardly a moment players, whether playing solo or cooperatively, weren’t smiling or laughing. My turn came, and even though I was solo, I found the charm of the game instantly clicking with me.
Wattam revolves around a curious green character with a black hat (the Mayor). At the start of the game, he is extremely lonely and yearning for a friend. Suddenly, a pebble, small and unmoving, reveals itself to this solitary political figure and the journey begins. This very moment spurs an unending train of happiness as you amass more friends and play with reckless abandon. You’ll be able to hold hands with two other friends as you merrily run around with them.. You can even switch between these characters if you feel like playing as the pebble or any other being you meet. Your options will grow and grow as you continue.
The feeling that Wattam gave me, and perhaps other players who tried it, is hard to describe. I find it almost a nostalgic feeling of being a child having lots of goofy fun with no major worries on my shoulders. I was so happy to play Wattam and see these crazy characters having endless amounts of fun. I was terrified of accidentally hurting my newfound friends with my exploding hat, but as they clamored around and urged me to ‘Kaboom’ – I had to oblige. And I’m glad I did as I watched them fly around, laughing to no end.
Wattam is the ultimate try-not-to-laugh-or-smile challenge, one I am happy to say I’ll never be able to pass.
Wattam is coming soon to Steam and Playstation 4.
I’m waiting for this game like literally forever
