Unto The End loads every encounter with danger with its intelligent opponents, tasking you with reading their actions and finding a weakness to strike at.
You’re just trying to make it home to your family. Trouble is, everybody seems to want to get in your way, from monsters to warriors to the terrain itself. Every living being you run into has a place in the world and a firm desire to keep breathing, so expect a hard fight each time. It doesn’t take many hits to kill or be killed, but everyone fights with care, protecting themselves while seeing when you’re vulnerable. If you start swinging wild, they’ll cut you up. You need to carefully watch what each fighter does, looking for an opening.
That’s not always easy, as enemies can use a variety of weapons, from melee to ranged, to swipe at you, and they don’t always fight alone. You really need to focus on defense if you’re going to want to live through this game. That said, you can also use terrain and enemy weapons against them, so while you’re dodging thrown spears, you may be able to time it right and have your foes take each other out. It’s a game about slashing with swords, but it’s cunning, more than strength, that will keep you alive.
Unto the End creates some tense combat situations with its 2D fights, making you really pay attention to each enemy and what it can do. It makes for some memorable scraps, to be sure, and makes for some highly-compelling action each time an enemy shows up.
Unto The End is available now on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Google Stadia, GOG, and Steam. The Nintendo Switch version will be available on Dec 17/20.
