Set in the deepest depths of space in the far future, Yucatan takes a Mayan myth and gives it a neon, science-fiction racing twist.
Currently seeking funding over on Kickstarter, Hairy Heart Games’ Yucatan is an exciting adventure which plays out on floating tracks in outer space. In it, you will hurtle along tracks, grabbing abilities to blast and surge your way around an extensive track. Being in space, it’s not all on a traditional plane; you’ll need to twist, flip and realign as you hurtle through the void, carefully securing decent landings to hold on to as much speed as you can and keep your time down.
There’s an exceptional feeling to the driving and drifting once it all clicks into place, somewhere between Crazy Taxi and old arcade racers like Daytona. Space handbrakes, as it turns out, are as lethal as the dark reaches wrapping around the track, and the landmines jutting from it.
While Yucatan‘s mingling with Mayan myth might not be especially visible in the playable demo, the neon and hot pink combined with the chatty, floating, day of the dead skull (Charlie Skullface) is a really good fit. Already a juicy, wild trip, it’s only enhanced by the Mexican surf music and UK punk/grunge soundtrack. While Aristotle said ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its part’, Yucatan instead offers up a mixture of things which just shouldn’t work well together, but come together perfectly.
A demo for Yucatan is available on Itch.io. You can also support the game’s development through Kickstarter.
