WHAT THE GOLF? is golf for those who like to be surprised. And who hate golf. Just roll with it.
WHAT THE GOLF? might have you golfing your golfer toward the hole. Maybe you’ll be playing soccer with the ball. Some office furniture might need to get putted toward the green. Sometimes a driving range has more to do with cars than golfing. It feels like a mixture of Wariorware and golf, where you’re given a little hint at what you’ll be doing with the level’s title, and then get to be delighted by how the developer has created a stage around a golf pun or story idea. Or another game, like the Superhot-inspired slo-mo golf shootout levels will have you doing.
It all uses a simple, familiar mechanic where you direct the ball, then choose how much power you’ll be using to hit it with. This can be done with a quick input that’s intuitive to do, meaning you’ll be freely golfing within a few shots, leaving you free to savor in whatever joke the developers have baked into each level. No need to panic when you’re golfing an entire house around.
Each of these jokes and puns are a riot, on top of making some good fun of the game’s golf mechanic. Whether through flipping tables, guiding a horse and jockey around, or through golf-swinging around as a spider-fella, the game seems to have an endless array of silly things you can do with its mechanics. It’s charming in that it is constantly trying to surprise you as you play it, setting up countless silly moments with its goofy physics and punny levels.
I haven’t been this excited just to see a level title in a long, long time, and with its constant funny moments (and some deviously clever rearrangements of sports and other games into golf-like play), WHAT THE GOLF? made for some wonderful moments at Pax East.
WHAT THE GOLF? is projected to release in 2019, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist or chat with its developers on Discord.
